“I am a once was, not a has been”
Every once in a while you meet someone who makes such an impact on your life. That someone for me is Kathy Shell. We first met at a weight loss forum where she very quickly became a valued member because of her wealth of knowledge and always having the right words to lift someone up.
So I want to introduce you all to her
……………
Internationally acclaimed artist, KATHY SHELL
A survivor of several life threatening violent events as well as illness, I ‘escaped’ at a very early age from a violent world around me and a fear of people, into an inner world of art and the love of natures beauty, poetry and my love of wildlife and dogs.
I had a most unusual childhood, not a childhood in the normal manner. My mother, absent father, 2 uncle, cousins and older sister were all geniuses and there were no toys or normal conversation it was all create from charcoal you made yourself and sculpt from clay you dug from the ground and go to work from age 8 to earn the money to attend evening art school and buy art materials then turn up at school only for the purpose of taking the exam and passing.
I educated myself in primary school by talking to intelligent and creative family members, reading Websters Unabridged Dictionary, The complete works of William Shakespeare and the Wold Book Encyclopedia 1948 version, lol, and of course my art studies. Later I went to university to obtain a science degree, to ‘fall back on’, if ever there were hard times like a depression and I could not earn my living as an artist.
I never needed that, though I worked in ‘the dog world’ as I painted dog portraits as a child, I also trained dogs as I loved them, met Reg that way.
I did some nursing night duty when my children were babies as I could not focus on fine art and do carer duties, then or now. I do not paint a lot any more. Fine art is a labour intensive passion, which required a total focus.
This is why I mostly write essay length articles now, and produce my art in a small art/craft/print format for sale father than as originals. I am now primarily a carer.
There is a lot of confusion about my status, I don’t wonder, I create it.
. People assume I am retired and can paint and create on a while with lots of leisure time. Truth is I am a full time writer, putting in a forty hour week at least, this in constantly interrupted, fragmented ad extended with carer duties, and I strive to add several hours a day of fitness training to this as my health at 63, is not something I take for granted, I am here because of my emphasis on fitness, nutrition and wellness.
Then on top of that, there is a house and garden if in studio or travel time and greet our guests to the caravan studio, if on tour time, and someplace in all that I strive to do a little bit of art and find some sleep hours.
Creative people are not people of leisure.
I have five novels in my head, one day, I might pen them. In the meanwhile I enjoy blogging in short essay length to satisfy the writer muse and my painter muse needs to rest on her laurels for what she was able to achieve during my active gallery professional artist career.
