Well I wish we could say the best way to keep our kids safe is by not letting them use the internet until, hmmm, say 30! hehe, oh so cruel! Imagine if my Mum had said that to me! I think I would have died! So the best ways to keep kids safe is in my opinion,
1. Don't let them use the internet without supervision, keep the computer in a high traffic area, they won't do anything due to fear of MUM seeing, heaven forbid!
2. Put password locks on certain features of the computer so they can't log into certain sites and if the search button hits on something that fits a no, no criteria then it blocks them.
3. Don't put your passwords somewhere obvious so when you are out they will find them and get up to mischief!
4. Build trust with them. Tell them you trust there judgment and ask what they are doing and in a friendly manner let them know consequences of actions which may be no good.
5. Give time restrictions, no computer after a certain time.
6. Teach them to be smart! Give them the knowledge of what to look for and what to avoid. Such as chat rooms and emails. And teach them young, they will probably help you in the future.
7. Make it clear to other friends parents of your rules and that you expect your child to follow these in there house regarding the internet.
8. Lash out on some good software if you can and install it and read the manual!

We have literally 5 days ago bought our first ever computer we have used my families for the past 3 years. So the credit card took a beating! We hope to buy things as we go, we didn't get the Security software of this level but my husband is paranoid so we got some, I am paranoid now, especially since this is the main computer now so this software would be a god sent, especially since we use the internet a lot with my husband who works away from home for a month or more and this is the only means of communication so we would hate for the computer to not work because of a security issue and our daughter not be able to see her daddy.

Make sure your kids understand how inportant it is NOT to give out personal information, as it may not be another child they are chatting with, even if it really sounds like one. Keeping the computer in a common room, such as the lounge room, also helps you to track what sites your child may be entering.

The rule in our house is that she is not allowed to upload a picture of herself on the internet and we always maintain access to all her online accounts, just to make sure. We also have the computer in a common place everyone can see what is happening on it.

My daughter is only 3, but she's already working her way around the computer and internet. For her, we have a Fisher Price Fun 2 Learn keyboard and some of the accompanying games. It has a parental lock that prevents her from getting back out to the desktop. We also use Kidoz, which is a kid safe web browser.
