Keeping a gift closet

I was thinking today about how I promised myself at the end of last year that I would be more organised for this year’s Christmas and how I would buy gifts throughout the year. But with moving house and everything else that has happened this year, I’m not as organised as I wanted to be so I plan to be more prepared…

Buying gifts ahead of time when you see them and know they are perfect for your family and friends will save you a lot of time and hassle. But do you have somewhere to store them? Other than your “safe place” that is so safe that when the time comes, even YOU can’t find it!

How about creating a gift closet?

Clear a space for your gift closet. It doesn’t need to be a whole closet. It could be part of one, or even a storage container stashed under the bed (which is what I’m planning on doing until I have a spare closet).

Once you have your space ready, write a list of everyone who you buy gifts for throughout the year. Then, go shopping!  Shop year-round, looking for deals on things that the people on your list will like. But think timeless. Don’t buy anything that has expiry date like gift cards.

Stick a post-it note with the recipient’s name written on it so you don’t forget who you bought it for and maybe even keep an inventory list so you can keep track of what you have bought and who it’s for.

It would also be a good idea to buy items that can be used for unexpected events like last minute birthday invites and dinner parties.

  • I thought about this recently too because I am always forgetting where I put something I bought for someone and stumble across it months later. My house is pretty small so I'm going to have to get a little creative. Maybe a solid container to put on the top shelf in my closet. Hmmm...?
  • Oh, did I say that I've lost my list too! SIGH
  • I love this idea. I'm always finding great gifts for friends over the summer, but never buy the item. I never thought of using post it notes to remind me who's gift was who's. In my house that would come in handy even if the gift was bought in November!
