I was recently sent a copy of “Dave is Brave” from Amanda Gray (no relation ), a special education teacher.

This is the first book in the Learn to be Buddies series, using realistic pictures and storylines to help teach youngsters aged between 3 and 6 behavioural and social skills.

The Dave is Brave pack consists of the book and 2 CD’s.

The first CD is a music CD with a catchy little song called Be Brave. It also contains a listening activity where the kids need to find specific pictures in the book and discuss them. The second activity has the author reading the book aloud but leaving some words out so the kids can interact with the story.

The second CD contains resources for parents/teachers to use. The 2 games I’m interested in using with my younger babes are the How are You Feeling? board game which is designed to help kids learn about different emotions and how to respond to them. The other one if the Feelings game which consists of cards with facial expressions. These can be used to play snap or memory or other games (limited only by your and your children’s imaginations)

I think this is a great little resource to help explain to children about bullying and how to deal with it. I’m always telling my kids that there is no need to resolve conflicts with violence and that words can be just as powerful.

I recommend adding Dave is Brave to your children’s reading library.

To help my child deal with bullies I encourage him to use strategies such as telling an adult, using conflict resulation words such as "stop"Ï don't like it" and helping him to develop empathy for other children who are different for himself.
I think the most important strategy to use is to develop their self esteem so they feel confident to seek out solutions to problems such as bulling.

Bulling is an issue we all will most likely have to deal with at some time,
As a teacher I used to see it a lot and I think how will I teach mine,
It is important to teach children that it is okay to say 'no',
And that it is not okay for other people to hurt you so,
Teaching needs to be gentle and not thrust upon,
They need to feel comfortable and these tools are fantastic and so are songs,
The book and card makes the information something of interest for little ones,
They are playing and learning while having fun,
It can be easy to tell a child what to say,
But actions speak louder then words and these books and games help in this way,
Telling someone your feelings are a tough one for most,
So the feeling games are a important part to finding out what happened and get close,
So I will tell them to say no, and to walk away,
But if something happens and they don't want to tell, I am glad there are books to read and games to play.

This is fantastic. My son is autistic so has to be "taught" social skills, using visuals. What a fantastic range. This will really help us teach him. With help of his preschool he has been taught to say "Stop it. I do not like it." Then if it persists we have told him to tell the teacher, rather than retaliate.

My children are not school age yet, but my son will be heading into Kindergarten next year. To be honest I have no idea how I'm going to approach the issue of 'bullies'. I suppose it's something I should be thinking about? So any resource or educational matter would be extremely useful.

I always taught my children when someone their own size (age) bullies them ...to look them in the eyes - and say "I don't like you hitting/pushing me , don't do it again".
I also tell them to then turn around and walk away ..
