When I was young, the only times we went to church (aside from weddings, christenings and funerals) was Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. We weren’t practicing Catholics but still celebrated the religious holidays, which included not eating meat on Good Friday.

Now, with my own family, we celebrate Easter, not as a religious holiday, but as a celebration of family. We still don’t eat meat on Good Friday, only because it has been a tradition for so long in my life that I just kept it. It doesn’t really have much affect to the kids because we sometimes have takeaway on a Friday night for dinner so having takeaway fish and chips is no big deal.

I was perusing one of my all time favourite forums this evening and I came across an Easter Countdown. While I use the MHH Christmas Countdown to help organise our Christmas, I didn’t think that the Easter Countdown was applicable to me. We don’t send out Easter cards (actually no-one I know sends out Easter cards). We only buy gifts for the kids and we don’t decorate THAT much.

So it got me thinking about how many people would actually follow the countdown and actually celebrate Easter as big as they would celebrate Christmas?

Our celebrations really only focus on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.  We never decorated for Easter before but I admit, this year I have decorated a little. I made an easter egg garland and I have bought some little ceramic bunnies to put out on my dresser.

On Good Friday, we have a casual meal of fish and chips. Easter Saturday sees us dying hard-boiled eggs and wondering how we’re going to keep the dogs away from the little chocolate eggs that Bill will hide in the morning for Giorgia and Annabelle to hunt for. Easter Sunday sees the kids waking up to gifts of new winter pajamas and a small amount of chocolate eggs. The younger girls will head outside to hunt for the Easter eggs and then we’ll all sit down for a family breakfast.

How do you celebrate Easter?
