Assuming, much?

I was reading the latest confessions on TMC today. Usually I don’t comment unless I have something to say. I do “me too” a few confessions if I find I need to. But today I read the most ridiculous one yet.

Someone had posted that when she sees a child under 2 years old with pierced ears, she automatically assumes that the child has a teenage mum.

I can’t understand this assumption. My background is European. It’s almost custom to get your daughter’s ears pierced before her first birthday. All my girls had their ears pierced when they were younger and I’m no teenage mum.

The problem here is stereotyping. This person obviously doesn’t think that young girls should have their ears pierced and obviously thinks that teenage mums are irresponsible and don’t know what they are doing.

I’d love to chat with this woman to see what other ridiculous assumptions she has made.

I had someone tell me the exact same thing once. I couldn't believe it. I told them that many people do it because they want to tell the difference between a boy and girl or so that people don't think their girl is a boy. Others do it because they think it's cool, but most teen mothers I know don't get their kids ears pierced.

It is silly to assume things like that. There are so many different customs. My family is made up of different nationalities so I'm fortunate to know about some Greek, Puerto Rican, Jewish, and Italian customs. I chose to wait with my daughters but many do it right after birth. Big deal!

Good post. I love learning about customs in other countries. As an American, I had never heard of the ear-piercing of infants... not until I read it on your blog months ago! It was just far out to me, lol. I got it done at 17 and that was bad enough, haha!

It's diificult knowing about other's customs when large oceans lie between countries. Of course, the Internet brings us all closer, but we all learn something new every day. In America, ear-piercing is usually delayed until the teen years (when I was a kid anyway-- I think piercing is even earlier now). I know that in Middle Eastern countries, ear-piercing has been associated with slavery! So...

Yes, that's a ridiculous assumption. I think little girls are so adorable when their ears are pierced and I really love to see how the different cultures adorn their children with jewelry a young age.

I agree with you ! First of all it`s none of anyone`s business what you , myself , or anyone else does with their children.Unless the child is being abused. I had my daughters ears pierced at 4 weeks old . She was born as bald as Telly Suvallice . The only way anyone knew she was a girl was because she was wearing earrings ! She slept through the whole thing ! She was bald until she was almost two years old ! She will be 16 the 10th of February. She wants her belly button pierced, I say absolutely not !! Am I a bad or good mother for saying no ?

My two eldest daughters wanted their belly buttons pierced as well. But I
did let them get it done. Although we didn't go to a tattooist to get it
done. We were lucky to find a doctor who has decided that he'd rather do it
so people can get it done in a very sterile and safe environment. He also
does numbs the area first with a local. That's how I got my belly pierced
too. I wouldn't have done it otherwise.

ur sure your not over assuming? perhaps she thinks that young mums are more into making their kids/bubs cool with ear piercings than a non-teen mum? (not as a bad thing) then again i havent read the whole piece..

I read that too. My 3 girls all had their ears pierced by the time they were one. I had my first daughter when I was 22, so I was no 'teenage mum' either. I think that lady needs to stop judging people and get a life.
