I was sitting today thinking about what our Christmas traditions are. Just the little things that we do each and every year to make the holiday season extra special.

12weeks2 The most obvious tradition is decorating the Christmas tree. We always do it on December 1. We put on a Christmas CD, put on our Christmas hats and make an evening out of it with snacks and drinks. Putting the star on the top of the Christmas tree is Daddy’s job :)

Another tradition is having some sort of Advent calendar. I’m still trying to find the perfect one that allows me to put in 5 little gifts for each day for each child. But I usually make an Advent calendar for them.

I make up little bags of Reindeer food (rolled oats and glitter) so the kids can sprinkle it out on the front lawn so the reindeer can find their way to our house. The older kids keep telling me that they’re too old for this sort of stuff now but I tell them that we made Christmas special for them when they were little, so they can help by making it special for their younger siblings. And anyway, if you don’t believe, you don’t receive…LOL

Christmas Eve is our night to go looking at Christmas lights. I mentioned that I wanted to add an extra tradition of the family Christmas sack that will be waiting for us when we get back home. We usually watch a Christmas DVD and play games and TRY to have an early night!

On Christmas morning, the kids wake up disgustingly early…lol…so they know that they can open the gifts in their stockings but they have to wait for Bill and I to get up so we can open our gifts as a family. But what usually happens is that as soon as they open their stocking gifts, Giorgia comes running in to wake us up…lol

Because we always have lunch and/or dinner elsewhere, we always have a Christmas breakfast at home. But this year will be different. We will be having Christmas lunch at home.

A new tradition that we’re starting this year is Boxing day with my sister and her family. We decided that we wanted to pick a day that will be OUR day every year and Boxing Day will be it.

What are your Christmas traditions?
